Ready to start construction? Building a new home is an exciting experience, and it’s important to stay involved every step of the way. Here are a few tips to help you get started:
Understand your sales contract. Fine print matters, so read the entire thing multiple times and ask any questions up front.
Establish good communication with your builder. Make sure you both agree on expectations, schedule and how involved you plan to be. You also should outline how change orders will be handled (for instance, a written addendum in your sales contract).
Plan ahead and be prepared to make timely decisions. There are so many decisions to make, but staying on schedule is really important. Make decisions and stick with them!
Learn the community. From architecture standards to fencing and more, see how your home will integrate into the neighborhood and surrounding area.
Don’t rush the “punch list.” As your home nears completion, you and your builder will work through a list of items that need to be completed, repaired or replaced. Make sure it’s all finished to your satisfaction before you move in.
