Choose A Lot

Building your dream home from the ground up is an exciting journey. You get to hand-pick every detail – starting with the location! – and create a home that is truly your own. Here are a few tips to help you find that perfect lot:

• Consider the size of your home. Sometimes buyers do this backwards, focusing first on an ideal homesite and then thinking about what would fit there. But you’ll be living inside your home, so start with that and then pick a spot where the home will fit comfortably on the site. You might consider working with your builder to choose the best site for the plan you desire.

• Stay within budget. The cost of a homesite typically accounts for about 20% of the home’s overall price. So if a larger living space is your priority, you may want to consider having a smaller yard to keep the overall price at a level that fits with your budget. 

• Think about upkeep. A large yard with lots of landscaping and a small yard with less maintenance have different requirements. You will invest either time or money (or both!) on upkeep, so consider how much of either you want to spend.

• Consider the community. You’ll want to think through convenience, lifestyle, amenities and more. Do you want privacy? A relaxing commute? Proximity to schools? Access to golf, swimming or other activities? Decide now.
